Abstract

Plasticizers are additives that are added to a plastic material to give it flexibility, resilience and durability properties. They are used extensively in PVC plastics and to a lesser extent in certain other materials. These compounds are small molecules that, when are used in food contact materials, may extract or leach out of the plastic into the food. The determination of some plasticizers by attenuated total reflectance - Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy is approached in this work. An analytical method is developed to determine diisononyl phthalate (DiNP), diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (DEHA) both in solvent and in solid samples. Two procedures are carried out to analyse the three plasticizers; one of them is performed by direct measurement of solutions, for higher concentrations, and the other one by preconcentrating the sample on the ATR crystal, for the lowest concentrations. Partial least squares (PLS) regression is used to relate spectral signals and concentration.
