Abstract

Background: Bipolar disorder is a chronic psychiatric disorder that causes intense fluctuations in mood between euphoria and depression. Nursing boarding is a key point given the high suicide rates and the significant impact of the family accompaniment presence that characterize this disorder. Objectives: The main purpose of this review is to know the key role that nursing plays in handling bipolar disorder. At the same time, we must analyse the suicide risk of this and, finally, the role of nurse in family support. Methods: The working methodology has been a systematic bibliographic review of papers based on the scientific evidence of the past 5 years. The search for them has been carried out in the following databases: Pubmed-Medline, CINAHL, Cochrane Library and Dialnet. The implementation of this review has been carried out according to the methodology set out in the PRISMA protocol. Results: A final result of 15 articles, included in the present bibliographic review, has been obtained: 4 randomized clinical trials, 3 observational studies, 2 narrative reviews, 3 qualitative and 1 quantitative investigations. Conclusions: Nursing professionals play an essential role in caring for bipolar disorder, through evaluations, monitoring, health education, early prevention and detection, setting clinical criteria and therapeutic strategies by combining psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy to bring good therapeutic adherence along with wealth and potential to the individualized care plan. Psychoeducational sessions and the active involvement of the family encourage an organized life, thus decreasing suicidal ideation and overloading
