“Foc!, Que ens han enganyat”: El republicanisme gironí el 1868-1869

Abstract

Amb la caiguda de la monarquia autoritària d’Isabel II la Revolució Gloriosa de Setembre de 1868 va encetar una dinàmica de llibertats i esperances per a les classes populars que anaven més enllà d’un simple destronament; s’esperaven avenços revolucionaris. Al llarg de l’any següent es difongueren les idees republicanes federals i les seves organitzacions abans clandestines. Malgrat això els resultats electorals a Corts Constituents els va proporcionar el paper d’oposició minoritària. Amb dos mesos s’enllestí una Constitució democràtica però migrada en molts aspectes segons els republicans, s’aprovà un estat monàrquic i centralista en lloc d’un de republicà i descentralitzat, entre d’altres mancances. Entre les files republicanes es produïren divisions. Al llarg de l’estiu de 1869, amb les Corts tancades, el govern de Madrid va donar instruccions de limitar i frenar el republicanisme. Això portà el govern a la reacció desobeint la nova Constitució. Els republicans s’abocaren a la rebel·lió en considerar la situació d’engany, i també d’indignació, ja que ells es consideraven representants de la política veritablement democràtica. A Girona tres diputats republicans, Francesc Sunyer i Capdevila, Pere Caimó i Josep Toribi d’Ametller dugueren a terme la revolta armada. Malgrat el Foc de la Bisbal, favorable als insurrectes, la resta no va sortir bé. Si bé hi havia prou homes mancà armament, però sobretot es va fer un abús de la improvisació. El Partit Republicà gironí palesà una greu manca de maduresa i coordinació. El fracàs fou el denominador comú a tot Espanya (octubre de 1869)
