Abstract

Ponencia presentada en el XI Congreso Internacional de Ingeniería de Proyectos celebrado en Lugo en el año 2007 Nowadays it exists a growing demand of medical implants, with increasing demands regarding to biocompatibility, aesthetics and functionability, at same time that patient’s wait time and costs reduction are demanded. From decades ago, implants have been manufactured by mechanizing titanium. It exists the possibility of use prefabricated implants, which only need to mechanize the suitable adjustments for each patient, so waiting times are reduced but implant must be processed twice. The present article presents a study about the different alternatives existing in the market in order to improve the implants and their manufacture process, empathizing in the use of biomaterials and RP (rapid prototyping) techniques instead of metallic materials and mechanizing techniques.
