Abstract

The objectives of this research consisted of analyzing the psychosocial needs of students with mental health problems detected by professionals in ordinary secondary education resources. After reviewing the literature and legislation, a descriptive study of the psychosocial support needs detected by secondary education teachers in students with mental health problems was carried out. This is carried out through surveys or interviews of our own elaboration and has allowed us to detect what tools, support, adaptations, etc. are needed to be implemented in the education system to meet the needs detected. The study has involved the participation of secondary school teachers belonging to two secondary schools, 198 teachers in total, of whom 52 have participated in completing the surveys. In the same way, interviews were carried out with guidance counselors of the Therapeutic Educational Units of the Valencian Community. The results confirmed the hypotheses put forward, reflecting the lack of human and specialized resources in educational centers, the lack of specialization and training of teachers, as well as the lack of institutional support and the lack of knowledge about mental health in adolescents, especially among teachers, which leads to a lack of empathy and educational malpractice. These results are discussed and turn out to be mostly coincident, based on the literature published on the subject.
