Objectives. To obtain the views of the patient on their participation in decision making in the field of Primary Care and to compare if there are any differences between the patients’ opinions of three different Health Centers in the Province of Castellón. Methods. A survey is prepared based on the reviewed bibliography with which 309 interviews are conducted to patients who are in the waiting rooms of Primary Care consultations, specifically, in the three Basic Health Zones selected in the Province of Castellón. Results. 39.2% of patients consider that decisions must be made jointly between doctor and patient (SDM). 83.7% would like their opinion to be taken into account. However, just 77% consider that their physician usually takes their opinion into account. The fundamental reason why patients consider that their opinion is not always taken into account is due to their lack of knowledge as a patient (46.1%). According to the patients, they are allowed to give their opinion to a greater extent regarding treatment options (72.2%) as well as in the case of chronic pathologies (40.8%) and/or mild ones (52.4%). 67.3% of patients consider that their doctor usually encourage them to ask questions. 64.7% of the patients do not know any tool that facilitates the SDM. Conclusions. Patients are still reluctant to have SDM, mainly preferring that it is the doctor who makes health-related decisions. However, an increasing percentage of patients would like to be involved in a SDM. The majority of patients perceive that their family doctors take their opinion into account. Nevertheless, in the cases where they do not have it into account, we found as a main reason, their lack of knowledge as a patient. As regards the type of diseases, it is in mild and/or in chronic pathologies where the patient's opinion is usually taken into account to a greater extent. In general, the majority of patients consider that their doctor encourages them to participate in the consultation but do not know the tools that facilitate SDM. For this reason, it is necessary to design more strategies to better involve patients in the decision-making process. After comparing the results of the 3 Health Centers with each other, no statistically significant differences have been obtained, therefore, we can conclude that despite presenting different sociodemographic factors, the opinion of their patients regarding SDM is similar.
