“SAHELI = AMIGA” El trabajo sexual en India

Abstract

Poverty and inequality are still the main challenges of today's globalized world, in the struggle to move towards sustainable human development, to ensure the full exercise of the rights of all human beings in balance with the environment that surrounds us, Cooperation Development includes sets of actions aimed at achieving a fairer and more sustainable international society. These actions are carried out by public and private organizations in order to promote a global, sustainable, inclusive and equitable social progress. The Master of Development Cooperation, Specialization Cooperation and Development Policy of the University Jaume I of Castelló, in which this work is part, aims to answer the need for high-level training on Cooperation Development. To make this possible as more complete learning experience, the master includes the need to conduct external internships (International Practicum) in to the field, including in India. In recent years, India has experienced strong economic growth as well as an improvement on human development, however poverty and gender inequality remain a harsh reality. The complexity of its social structure and the alarming situation of sexual exploitation as one of the worst forms of violence against women and as a result of gender inequality present in the world, make it an important issue at global level. The process of internship referred to in this document, is carried out in Saheli, organization of women in sex work that promotes empowering them through collectivization, located in the city of Pune in the state of Maharashtra, in one of the largest red light districts of India, working to improve the quality of life of women in sex work.
