Abstract

Research in educational field has long confirmed the importance that early interpersonal relationships have on the children’s socio-emotional and school development , and how rejection and negative experiences with peers have a strong influence on their social and personal adjustment that can have repercussions throughout life. As part of a broader study about peer relationships in children aged 6 years, the objective of this study is to analyze relations between sociometric typology and social centrality measures (group and individual), the membership to peer group, and measures of friendship, focusing on the case of the rejected children. The instruments used are the Preference Sociometric Questionnaire (Grei, 2009) and Friendship Sociometric Questionnaire (Grei, 2009). These questionnaires were applied to a sample of 276 children enrolled in five public schools in the province of Castellón, constituting twelve classrooms first grade elementary school. Calculations were carried out using specific programs: the Sociomet (Gonzalez and Garcia-Bacete, 2010) and SCM (Social Cognitive Maps, Cairns et al. 1998). The results indicate the variability in friendship networks, inclusion in peer groups and centrality position of the rejected children, with differences associated with gender. To know all these aspects of the classroom (subgroups, position of each child according to her/his relationships of acceptance and rejection, friendship networks, etc.) will help teachers to make decisions and interventions sucessfully.
