Abstract

The figure of Mariana of Austria and her role during the minority of Carlos II has aroused a historiographic debate of great relevance. On the one hand, he had to face a complex situation for the monarchy since the death of Philip IV, and on the other, he wished to resolve the difficulties of the moment as regent, legitimized by the laws of Castile and ratified in the will of Philip IV. Criticisms of the queen were not so much because of her status as a woman, but because she left aside a faction of the high nobility and the Junta of Government, established by her husband, to govern alongside two private Nithard and Valenzuela. In addition, one of the things that characterized her mandate was the fight that maintained with don Juan Jose of Austria, that wanted to take away the power to her. As well as maintaining the influence over his son Carlos II, after his exile.
