La figura de Mariana de Austria y su papel durante la minoría de edad de Carlos II ha suscitado un debate historiográfico de gran relevancia. Por un lado, se tuvo que enfrentar a una situación compleja para la monarquía desde la muerte de Felipe IV, y por otro, deseó resolver las dificultades propias del momento como regente, legitimada por las leyes de Castilla y ratificada en el testamento de Felipe IV.
