Abstract

This paper reviews recent contributions to environmental issues in Spanish agrarian history. Our thesis is that environmental variables and the ecological paradigm are relevant in contemporary agrarian historiography resulting in the breakdown of traditional theoretical and interpretative paradigms, partly due to their commitments to social movements from the end of Franco`s Era. Thus, new methodological contributions as a consequence of this new environmental perspective satisfactorily answer questions that were previously unanswered by conventional historiography, such as the causes of Spanish economic and agrarian backwardness in comparison with other more advanced agricultures. Environmental History has even been confused with Agrarian History with an environmental focus. The bulk of the historiographical contribution to Spanish Environmental History becomes evident in the areas researched, the evolution of scrubland or agrarian development throughout the last two centuries.
