Abstract

This work deals the death notification focused on police work, since the majority of the procedures written are focused on the health field. The first part deals all the theoretical aspects related to the meaning of bad news as well as its consequences for the receivers of such news. Thus, the grief stages for adults and children are explained, taking into consideration the understanding of death in children. Once known the meaning of death that children have, a range of strategies are proposed to communicate with children. As main goal of this work, a development of a protocol of recommended practical procedures for death notification intended for law enforcement officials, adapting an addition when dealing with minors. For a better understanding of these protocols, a practical case is analyzed; a traffic accident occurred in 2008 on the national highway N-340 (at km 996), in which 4 people were killed. Different officials had to notify the tragic event to the respective daughters and grandchild. In this case it will be analyzed the communication protocol stages adapted to death notifications, to later emphasize the right and the wrong actions as well as to develop a proposal to notify adults and 3-year old children. In this case where different type of officers intervened (Policía Local y Guardia Civil), the explained aspects of the protocols can be analyzed.
