Abstract

The present study analyses the current state of didactic resources for the teaching and learning of Catalan Sign Language (LSC). As a minority language, LSC is often excluded from mainstream educational policies, which results in a significant lack of adequate and accessible materials. The main objective of this research is to identify existing shortcomings and explore possible improvements, with special attention to the feasibility of a reverse dictionary that allows searches starting from the sign itself rather than from its gloss. To achieve this aim, two data collection techniques were used: semi-structured interviews with university-level LSC instructors and a questionnaire addressed to students of this language. The results show that visual resources are the most valued, whereas paper-based formats are perceived as obsolete. Furthermore, the practical activity included in the questionnaire reveals that current resources do not allow for sign identification from a video, which underscores the need for a reverse dictionary that enables users to search for a sign’s meaning through its parameters or a video of the sign itself. Although this study was not able to develop such a tool, it lays the groundwork for future research and provides relevant data to guide upcoming projects in this field.
