Abstract

Audiovisual texts can be a significant tool when portraying different cultures and transmitting them to a wide audience, therefore, they contain an infinite number of elements, called cultural referents, which allude to these cultures and allow us to understand them even better. When it comes to dubbing, the translator has the responsibility of reproducing them accurately in the target text in such a way that they do not lose their meaning and thus facilitating the audience's understanding. This paper therefore studies the Spanish dubbing of the film Brave and the translation of its cultural references. As a previous research, important aspects of audiovisual translation, dubbing and translation techniques are defined, as well as the specific translation strategies for cultural referents. Subsequently, this knowledge was put into practice in the analysis, which discusses the Spanish dubbing of the referents found in the film and the methods used by the translator to solve them. Lastly, it is concluded that the translator is often forced to change, omit, or adapt these elements through different techniques, since many of them do not have a direct equivalence in the target culture. The decisions made by the translator will vary according to the target audience of the audiovisual text.
