Abstract

Gender violence is a control mechanism linked to an ideological construction of gender relations in the system of patriarchal domination. This system can be understood as a social imaginary: a scheme able to establish what is real from the (re)construction of subjectivities assumed to be essential. Cinema, thanks to its double nature (real/imaginary) and the projection/identification processes, is a special device for the (re)construction of imaginaries. Hence, it should be considered what imaginary about gender violence is been transmitted (and (re)constructed) in the cinema. In the Spanish State, existing studies analyze commercial films that rarely address gender violence as a central axis plot. What happens when the films address directly gender violence? These films are presupposed to have an intention of complain and awareness, a willingness to participate in the eradication process of such violence. In this study I will analyze whether the speech content in these films is directed effectively to eradicate gender violence or, on the contrary, it encourages the perpetuation of patriarchal domination system and its clamping mechanisms.
