Abstract

The current Theoretical Final Work of Bachelor’s Degree in Theories of/nCommunication has the aim of studying the analysis of the masculinity in the American/nTelevision series Mad Men (AMC, 2007-)./n/nThere is a passion for fiction series. These series, some of them considered of high/nquality, are attracting millions of people around the world. They have taken possession/nof our living rooms in order to become the great show of our lives and also the biggest/nhome entertainment. Their stories, a mix between arts, economy, culture and society,/ndeserve our attention as they make us think about our world, lifestyles, fashion, diet and/neven vices. But it is not only the stories. It has also to be mentioned the capacity that/nsome fiction series –and their scriptwriters- have in order to present characters that/ncaptivate and penetrate the audience conscience. Those characters become family/nmembers and the audience becomes identified with them to a certain extent. That/nfeature articulates itself in a very careful and rich way in such an innovative story as it is/nMad Men and the Madison Avenue publicists leaded by Don Draper./n/nThe main aim of this Final Work of Bachelor’s Degree is to study the masculinity and/nthe roles of masculinity that are constructed in the fiction series of Mad Men, created by/nMatthew Weiner in 2007. In order to do that the thirteen episodes of the first season of/nthe series (aired from July to October 2007) will be analyzed. The investigation work/nthat is presented is centered in the analysis of the content and is based on the textual/nanalysis in order to discover the representation of the masculinity in those men/n“suffocated” in cigarettes and alcohol who gave birth to the ‘American dream’.
