This thesis is a play following Adele, a woman in her forties, as she investigates her mother’s involvement in the Korean War, more than fifty years after it. Following her mother’s death, she learns details of her military service, and of the existence of her former lover, who spent part of the war in the care of a Korean family in Seoul, struggling to survive. Adele speaks to the last surviving member of the family, and begins to understand the experiences of her mother and the world she lived in. Adele is forced to confront the dysfunctionality of her own family and her personal mistakes as she attempts to reconcile who her mother was and why with her own failed attempts to connect with and help her, as a daughter.
