Evaluation of Pyroxasulfone and Encapsulated Saflufenacil Mixture for Weed Control in Corn

Abstract

Encapsulated pyroxasulfone/saflufenacil is a new herbicide for weed control in corn. The encapsulation of saflufenacil allows for a more flexible application window that extends from preemergence (PRE) to early postemergence (ePOST). In 2022 and 2023 five field studies were conducted to establish the interaction between pyroxasulfone and saflufenacil, assess control of multiple-herbicide-resistant waterhemp (MHR), and evaluate different PRE and postemergence (POST) tank-mix options. Three rates of pyroxasulfone/saflufenacil (146, 195, and 245 g ai ha-1) were compared to three rates of pyroxasulfone and saflufenacil alone to assess the interaction on multiple weed species. Additionally, these rates were used to assess control of MHR waterhemp. Pyroxasulfone/saflufenacil (146 and 245 g ai ha-1) combined with PRE (atrazine, dicamba, and mesotrione + atrazine) and ePOST (dicamba/diflufenzopyr/isoxadifen, mesotrione + atrazine, and topramezone/dimethenamid-p + atrazine) tank-mix treatments were evaluated. Transient corn injury was documented when encapsulated pyroxasulfone/saflufenacil was applied POST and the interaction between pyroxasulfone and saflufenacil was additive.
