Programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) and programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) interact to regulate T cell biology. However, during infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), aberrant PD molecule expression contributes to pathological immune suppression. Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is molecularly similar to HIV and causes immunodeficiency in cats. Infection of cats with FIV serves as a model for HIV infection, and understanding differences between the viruses may increase understanding of HIV pathogenesis. In this report, feline PD mRNA and protein sequences are described, and PD molecule expression is quantified during T cell activation, apoptosis, and FIV infection. Expression of PD genes and proteins was significantly increased in T cells during in vivo FIV infection, and expression of PD proteins was significantly increased by activation and induction of apoptosis. Results suggest aberrant expression of PD molecules may contribute to T cell dysfunction during FIV-induced disease.
