Perhaps the most imposing currentresponsibility of applied ethics is facing the theoretical-practical difficulties posed by the incipient development of new bioenhancement technologies. These difficulties must be placed beyond individual preferences, as key issues are involved regarding our understanding of distributive justice. The awareness of two important facts enables us to orient the debate. First, there are the different and arbitrary starting situations provided by the natural lottery determine the array of opportunities for wellbeing of each individual. Second, we find with the possibility of that cognitive enhancement, that emerging technologies offer to the individuals who are less fortunate in their genetic makeup, could directly broaden such opportunities. The aim of this article is to defend the legitimacy of questioning a alleged prescription of this type of enhancements in the case of some non-human animals, and that this is consistent with a non-anthropocentric ethical paradigm where rationality is no longer the morally relevant criterion.
