Abstract

OBJECTIVES: Study the effect of two bisphosphonates on mandibular bone in Sprague-Dawley rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 70 rats, divided into 7 groups: group control, 3 groups receiving systemic dose of disodium pamidronate (3 mg/kg/day) during 1, 2 and 3 weeks respectively, and 3 groups receiving zoledronic acid at doses of 0'80 mg/kg/week for 1, 2 and 3 weeks. We did the extraction of the right lower molar, and then sacrificed the animals 14 days after the surgery. We measured in our study: new bone formation, through radiology; vascular and bone density, using esteorology; and microanalysis of elements (Ca and P) by EDX. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The administration of disodium pamidronate and zoledronic acid increased the new bone formation in the post-extraction socket, as well as higher mandibular bone density. The administration of zoledronic acid also caused decrease of vascular density and an increase of Ca and P in rats post-extraction bone.
