Abstract

El contexto: ética pluralista e instituciones. He venido defendiendo la opinión de que hemos de tomar en serio el diagnóstico weberiano de la escisión de la esferas de acción social como lo específico del proceso histórico moderno. Este es un diagnóstico que precisamos comprender en su complejidad. Ante todo, como es obvio, la propuesta encierra una reconstrucción histórica de la modernidad. En su núcleo de sentido, la tesis central se opone a la filosofía de la historia tradicional. Frente a ella, la tesis que defiendo mantiene que Occidente no ha evolucionado de una manera convergente y orgánica, como pretendieron los poderes espirituales que se disputaron la hegemonía directiva de la sociedad en los últimos siglos. Al contrario, Occidente ha evolucionado hacia la divergencia, la escisión y la pluralidad de la esferas de acción. Frente a las visiones progresistas ingenuas, la civilización atlántica ha seguido curso hacia la diseminación de conflictos y hacia los avances meramente parciales. Como cada una de estas esferas sociales genera sus propias estructuras de poder, la evolución de Occidente ha debido abandonar, a veces con muchas resistencias, los ideales de una soberanía omnipotente, para así entrar en la senda de la división de poderes, de corte más bien mitológico. Desde un punto de vista psicoanalítico, hoy, como había previsto Kelsen a principio de siglo, Occidente hace inviable el narcisismo de una pretendida omnipotencia de las soluciones.
