El siglo XIX, en especial en su segunda mitad, es el siglo de la higiene, de la preocupación o sensibilidad higiénica; una preocupación que en el seno de la institución escolar se manifestaría en los manuales de Higiene y Economía doméstica que harán su aparición con la introducción de la Higiene como asignatura en las escuelas de niñas, en 1857, y en los manuales de Urbanidad. Tras indicar el espacio y el contenido de la Urbanidad en el contexto de las enseñanzas escolares, este trabajo trata de esclarecer la perspectiva higienista que desarrollan los manuales de dicha materia, así como la articulación del tema de la higiene en el modelo de hombre y mujer (bien) educados en ellos propuesto. Código de (buenas) costumbres cristianas, el manual de Urbanidad pretende definir un conjunto de reglas externas en torno a las nociones de orden, decoro y respeto. De este modo, los valores higiénicos, insertos en un contexto más amplio, si bien suelen incluirse en un capítulo específico -titulado por lo general "Del aseo y la limpieza"-, también estarán presentes en otros muchos capítulos de dichos manuales. La insistencia que en ellos se observa por "higienizar" la vida de los niños y niñas, sometiéndola a criterios de racionalidad económica y social, convierte la higiene en un instrumento más de control dentro de la Urbanidad.

The XIXth century, specially in its second half, was the century of hygiene and hygienic sensibility; a sensibility shown, in the school institution, in Hygiene and Domestic economy textbooks that were published after the introduction of this subject in the schools for girls, in 1857, and of the textbooks on Civility. After pointing out the space and content of Civility in the context of school matters, this work tries to clarify the hygienist perspective developped in its textbooks, as well as the articulation of this topic of hygiene in the model proposed by them of (well) educated man and woman. Code of (good) Christian behaviours, the textbooks of Civility aspired to define a set of externa! rules based on the notions of order, decorum, and respect. In this way the hygienic values, inserted in a wider context, although they were usually included in a specific chapter -generally titled "On cleanliness and tidiness"- were also present in many other chapters of these textbooks. The insistence observed in them on the "hygienization" of the boys' and girls' life, submitting it to economic and social criteria of racionality, transforms the hygiene into one more too! of control within Civility.
