Tradiciones y pervivencias paganas en el Imperio Bizantino: el posicionamiento de Justiniano

Abstract

Una de las características más destacadas de la activa política religiosa del emperador Justiniano fue la preocupación por la pervivencia de creencias paganas en el seno de la sociedad bizantina; la legislación justinianea y las referencias literarias a esta actitud imperial evidencian este extremo. Creencias paganas que eran perceptibles claramente en poblaciones rurales pero existentes también en círculos cortesanos de Constantinopla. Analizar hasta qué punto el paganismo clásico estaba presente en el Imperio del siglo VI y el porqué y cómo de las disposiciones condenatorias de Justiniano, defensor en otros ámbitos del antiquarismo, son los objetivos fundamentales de este trabajo.
