Abstract

Although the educative aspects dealt with by de Institución Libre de Enseñanza throuout its history are quite diverse let us point out one the very many that the ILE considered of special relevance. That is to say: the role of the teacher in education. This role was always analysed from all possible perspectives (initial training period, improvements during his job, socia support, etc.). This paper presents a monographica point of view of this aspect, based on the thoughts of its most representative educators (Giner de los Rios, Cossio, Jiménez Fraud, Castillejo and Altarnira) as well as the teaching methodology applied in the Instituto-Escuela, a scholl which put into practice the teaching theories developed bv the members of this group. The autor tries to prove that the teacehr is the center of all attention in the educational thought of Giner and Cossio. To such a degree is true that the training if good professionals is considered by them as more important that any change of the whole educational system itself.
