Abstract

O conceito “Envelhecimento Ativo” foi introduzido em 2002 pela Organização Mundial de Saúde, definindo-o como o “processo de optimização das oportunidades para a saúde, participação e segurança, para melhorar a qualidade de vida das pessoas que envelhecem” (pg. 12). O incremento da qualidade de vida preconizado como objectivo fulcral do envelhecimento activo, contempla não unicamente indivíduos saudáveis e activos, mas também indivíduos frágeis, fisicamente incapacitados ou que necessitem de cuidados. Este conceito é mais abrangente que o conceito de envelhecimento saudável, pois para além da saúde são tomadas em conta os aspectos socioeconómicos, psicológicos e ambientais (Ribeiro & Paúl, 2011). Num projecto de envelhecimento activo, para além das políticas e programas que incrementam a saúde física, são igualmente importantes aquelas que promovem as relações sociais e a saúde mental. Em Portugal, a promoção do envelhecimento activo constituía uma das estratégias de intervenção do Programa Nacional para a Saúde das Pessoas Idosas (DGS, 2004), programa este elaborado com o aval científico da Sociedade Portuguesa de Geriatria e Gerontologia. Com este trabalho pretende-se através de uma revisão da literatura, apresentar os principais determinantes do envelhecimento activo, bem como, alguns dos muitos programas de promoção do mesmo, efectuados em distintos países.
