Abstract

Plant spacing affects the total and graded yields of potatoes The object of the present research was to evaluate the influence of planting density on the number of main stems, tuber number and tuber weight par stem and per hectare. The economic return was also considered. Field trials were conducted in Bragança (North-East of Portugal). The treatments used were 3, 4.4 and 6’ and 4, 6, 8 and 10 tubers.m-2 in 1995 and 1996, respectively. Tuber weight and tuber number per stem decreased with closer spacing. On the contrary, tuber weight and tuber number per hectare increased with closer spacing. The higher graded tubers (> 6Omm) results did not show significant differences. The most profitable return occurred with the higher planting density tested. Finally we emphasise the importance of establishing more uniform grades of commercial seed in order to male better planting density recommendations.
