Abstract

A importância económica dos insectos fitófagos depende do grau de artificialismo dos ecossistemas florestais. Níveis populacionais elevados de fitófagos são mais frequentes em florestas de produção intensiva do que em florestas naturais. Esta circunstância está em parte relacionada com a maior capacidade de autoregulação dos ecossistemas naturais devido à maior complexidade das cadeias tróficas. Nestes ecossistemas, o complexo de inimigos naturais (predadores, parasitóides e entomopatogéneos) normalmente mantém as populações de fitófagos abaixo dos níveis económicos de ataque. No entanto, factores abióticos e/ou bióticos podem ocasionalmente romper o equilíbrio ecológico resultando no aparecimento de níveis populacionais elevados de fitófagos (Amaro, 2003). As florestas de Quercus pyrenaica em Portugal são naturais e geralmente sofrem reduzida intervenção ao longo da sua vida. A ocorrência de populações de insectos que atinge nível de praga é assim pouco frequente. Consequentemente, estudos sistemáticos de insectos que se alimentam de Q. pyrenaica,e que podem eventualmente constituir praga, são raros(Carreras, 1987). Neste sub-capítulo, descreve-se brevemente a morfologia e o ciclo biológico das espécies fitófagas mais frequentemente referidas na literatura da especialidade que poderão ocasionalmente causar estragos e prejuízos em povoamentos de Q. pyrenaica.
