Sinopse da biogeografia de Portugal

Abstract

A biogeografia tem como objeto a distribuição espacial dos seres vivos e dos ecossistemas no espaço geográfico e ao longo do tempo geológico. No caso das plantas, a fitogeografia ocupa-se dos padrões de distribuição geográfica das espécies, comunidades, fitocenoses e ecossistemas e dos fatores ambientais e históricos em diferentes escalas espaciais e temporais que controlam essa mesma distribuição. Num sentido restrito, a fitogeografia ocupa-se do estudo das espécies de plantas, isto é, da flora, consideradas individualmente até a um nível agregado das “floras”, em função das afinidades ecológicas coletivas das plantas e sobretudo da sua origem pretérita comum, isto é, a sua raiz paleobiogeográfica comum num período geológico passado (ex., a flora de Rand, a flora madreana, a flora tetisiana, a flora cólquica). Num sentido contemporâneo, a fitogeografia, para além da flora, engloba também o estudo dos padrões de distribuição geográfica dos níveis de maior complexidade estrutural e funcional, isto é, ecossistémicos, que são o da comunidade, da fitocenose, do ecossistema e, por fim, dos biomas; e os fatores geográficos (solo, clima, ecológicos, evolutivos e históricos) que se associam a essa distribuição. Assim, ao estudo da distribuição de táxones pode aplicar-se a designação de corologia e à distribuição geográfica de unidades fitossociológicas, sejam sintáxones, séries ou geosséries, a designação de sincorologia.
