Abstract

Nos meados do século XVIII, Carl von Linné, ou Carl Lineu (1707-1778), justamente conhecido como o pai da botânica, e os seus contemporâneos presumiam que todas as espécies haviam sido criadas por um ente superior e que a sua forma e o seu número eram constantes. «As espécies são tantas como as que foram criadas no início pelo Infinito», escreveu Lineu em 1758. Se o Criador era perfeito, então, além de definitiva, a estrutura e a função dos seres vivos eram perfeitas e as necessárias para um adequado e permanente (infinito) funcionamento da vida na Terra. Influenciados pela filosofia essencialista, ilustrada por Platão (428/427- -348/347 a. C.) na conhecida alegoria da caverna, Lineu e os demais naturalistas pré-darwinianos supunham que a descrição dos produtos da criação, i. e., a prática da sistemática biológica, tinha por fim último a identificação das propriedades essenciais atribuídas pelo Criador às coisas vivas. Uma propriedade essencial – uma essência – era entendida como um elemento básico, neste caso de um ser vivo, sem o qual ele não pode ser o que é. A essência seria a causa direta da sua perfeição e intemporalidade. As propriedades não essenciais eram meramente acidentais.
