Abstract

No final da década de 30 do século xx, a Reabilitação surge, nos Estados Unidos da América (EUA), como conceito e intervenção especializada, embora só mais tarde, em 1947, tenha sido oficialmente reconhecida como especialidade médica, com definição de perfil de intervenção clínica. No que se refere à enfermagem, conceitos como autouidado autonomia estão já desenvolvidos desde o início da profissão, com Florence Nightingale a enfatizar a importância de a pessoa doente fazer por si própria Em 1894, em Inglaterra, quatro enfermeiras fundaram a Society of Trained Masseuses, que a partir de 1920 adotaria o nome de Chartered Society of Massage and Medical Gymnastics e que, posteriormente à evolução da Medicina Física e Reabilitação, deu origem à Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, designação que mantém na atualidade.
