Abstract

A prolificidade é um dos parâmetros reprodutivos que os produtores de pequenos ruminantes desejam otimizar de forma a aumentar, em cada época de pariçâo, o número de crias nascidas por fêmea parida. Geneticamente, é um parâmetro de baixa heritabilidade ("0, 10) e dependente de vários componentes como o desenvolvimento folicular, a taxa de ovulação (influenciada por mutações genéticas singularés, época do ano, paridade, nutrição e fatores hormonais), taxa de fertilidade e sobrevivência embrionária e fetal. Esta característica está sujeita a um forte determinismo genético e é passível de ser me- Ihorada pela introdução de genes melhoradorés em raças nas quais se pretende fixar esta característica - introgressão genética- com aumentos na taxa de ovulação. O aumento do número de borregos obtidos por ovelha e por ano pode ser conseguida com recurso a raças de elevada prolificidade. Esta é uma entre outras estratégias possíveis de intensificação reprodutiva que permitem elevar a taxa de nascimentos anual.
