Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the treatment of the Retinopathy of Prematurity by the diode laser in a private general hospital of Porto Alegre. Place: Serviço de Retina do Hospital Banco de Olhos de Porto Alegre. Methods: 56 newborn were examinated in a period between 1998 – 2002 under indirect binocular ophthalmoscopy after pupil dilatation in both eyes to prevent retinopathy of prematurity progression. Results: Only 11 of the 56 children examinated (near 20%) showed necessity for diode laser treatment under general anesthesia to prevent retinopathy of prematurity progression. All of the newborn treated were ROP 3 – threshold and plus disease. None of these 56 patients showed progression for stage 4 needing vitreo-retinal surgery as well as none of the 11 children treated by the laser in stage 3 of the retinopathy of prematurity needed any new treatment.
