After insulin had been available for use in the treatment of diabetic persons the survival o f these patients increased but is far from reaching the values observed in normal persons because cronic complications, which have a high morbidity are not prevented. So the major chalenge for endocrinologists is to find methods for precocious detecting and treating those complications. One complication diabetic nephropathy occurs in 30-40% of the patients with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus and recently it is known that it could be precocious/y detected if the patient has microalbuminuria. Today, severa/ routine laboratories can measure the albumin urinary excretion rate for saying if the patient has or not microalbuminuria. In this paper a critica/ review is made of the methods to obtain the samples and the interpretation of the results.

Após o aumento da sobrevida dos pacientes diabéticos pelo uso de insulina, o grande desafio à endocrinologia, para melhorar ainda mais o tempo e a quaiidade de vida destes pacientes, é a detecção precoce e o tratamento das complicações crônicas do diabete melito. Entre estas, a mais grave é a nefropatia diabética, a qual acomete 30 a 40% dos pacientes. Para sua detecção precoce, vários laboratórios já colocam à disposição dos clínicos a possibilidade de pesquisar a existência de microalbuminúria. Em vista disso, faz-se uma análise crítica dos cuidados a serem tomados na coleta de urina e na interpretação dos resultados.
