Redução dos desastres naturais : desafio dos geógrafos

Abstract

In recent years, natural disasters have become more frequent and caused more damage. To prevent such disasters there are two types of measures: the structural and non-structural, being that the latter stands at low cost. The principals of these measures are the early warning system, risk mapping and environmental education. The geographers, through their training, have full capacity to act in the disaster prevention. It is, however, observed that their performance falls short of their possibilities. Thus, this study sought to demonstrate the role that the geographers can play in the disaster management especially in relation to nonstructural measures.
