Abstract

Assessmentt of the amount of solids in stormwater is required for the sustainable management of urban waters. In a first paper of two the concepts of quantification of solid wastes in stormwater were presented. In this paper two procedures were used in order to estimate them in an urban catchment of Porto Alegre: (a) the amount of wastes that enter urban drainage was based on an indirect method which related the wastes to the rainfall; (b) quantification of the amount of wastes that enter a detention pond in Marinha Park in Porto Alegre. The basin covers 1.92 km2, 63% of which residential and commercial areas. The amount of wastes measured at the detention ponds during 8 months was 288kg and the amount which arrived in the drainage estimated by the indirect method was 940 kg. The difference between the estimates could be due to the retention in the drainage system of diluted materials such as, such as paper, and amount still in transit. Based on that, 30.6% or 33.2 g . inhab-1 . year-1of the solid wastes arrived at the outlet of the basin.
