Severe sepsis remains associated with high morbidity and mortality rates, so that new threrapeutics modalities must be sought. The release of various mediators (cytokines, platelet activating factor, oxygen free radicals etc.) of sepsis can be initiated by a variety of stimuli. Prospective clinical trials of diferente agents to block or attenuate cytokines or endotoxin are currently underway. While results of these trial are not fully available, it is more likely that one or more therapies against some of these pro-inflammatory mediators may prove effective in the management of severe sepsis.
