DISLIPIDEMIA EM ADOLESCENTES

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to review the current research advances in hyperlipidemia in adolescents and its relationship to coronary heart disease in adults. Initially the article presents some epidemiological aspects of the coronary heart disease and its risk factors, followed by some considerations on plasma lipoproteins. Several studies showing the relationship between disturbed lipid profiles and the occurrence of fatty streaks in arteries are presented. They also show that the changes found during adolescence are likely to remain in adulthood. Recommendations for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia in adolescents are presented; changes in lifestyle, such as the compliance with a nutritionally adequate diet, body weight control, physical activity and smoking cessation, are highlighted as important for the reduction of coronary heart disease risk factors.
