Research report that proposes an application of the communicative theory of terminology to a methodology for vocabulary control for indexing. The qualitative evaluation of this vocabulary was based on the selection of descriptors from a list of 2,129 descriptors. The corpus from which descriptors were collected consisted of articles published in Brazilian periodicals in Information Science, since 1995, sponsored by Post-graduate study programs. It became evident in the results that the same descriptors are being used with different meanings among indexing units; also that there is a lack of a net cross references and the need for qualifiers to specify the field of study of the term.
