Abstract

A biomassa florestal, pela via das aplicações em bioenergia, no desenvolvimento de bioprodutos e nas questões associadas à redução das emissões dos gases de estufa, tem tido uma cada vez maior importância na economia global. A biomassa florestal é pois uma reserva estratégica global que convém inventariar e monitorizar. As técnicas atuais de inventariação e monitorização da biomassa florestal são normalmente morosas e caras, urge pois, desenvolver técnicas fiáveis e a custos relativamente reduzidos que permitam realizar esta inventariação e monitorização da biomassa florestal. Face à problemática apresentada este trabalho utilizou imagens de satélite de alta resolução para inventariar e monitorizar a biomassa acima do solo a partir da projecção horizontal de copa das árvores. A metodologia usada permite desenvolver tecnicas de inventário florestal para as espécies Quercus rotundifolia e Quercus suber considerando a Projecção Horizontal de Copa Cumulativa medida com base em imagens de satellite de alta resolução especial, com um erro previsão inferior a 5%.
