Abstract

O colostro é o "kit inicial" de cada vitelo, contendo nutrientes, compostos bioativos, células microrganismos que fornecem energia e proteção contra agentes patogénicos e contribuem para a maturação e desenvolvimento do trato gastrointestinal. Compostos como os ácidos gordos, as proteínas do soro, os oligossacáridos, as células imunitárias e os microrganismos estão presentes no colostro e são essenciais para a saúde e bem estar do vitelo recém-nascido, pelo que a sua importância não deve ser subestimada. O seu efeito sistémico está largamente dependente da absorção intestinal não-seletiva que ocorre durante as primeiras 24 h de vida. Após este período, grande parte destas moléculas passam a ter um efeito apenas local.
