Abstract

The main objective of this study is to understand how sexism manifests itself among adolescents. To this end, we used a sample consisting of 139 high school students living in three municipalities in the Alentejo and Médio-Tejo area, aged between 14 and 19 years. Data was collected using the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory (Glick & Fiske, 1996) and the Ambivalence Inventory towards Men (Glick & Fiske, 1999), adapted to Portuguese by Costa and colleagues (2015), in addition to a sociodemographic characterization questionnaire. The results indicate that, regarding sexism towards women, adolescent boys present more hostile and benevolent sexism than adolescent girls, and regarding sexism towards men, adolescent girls present more hostile sexism than adolescent boys, however, adolescent boys exhibit more benevolent sexism. Even so, there are higher levels of sexism mostly between younger teenagers, more religious, with more right-wing political ideas and living in more urban municipalities.
