Abstract

O presente relatório aborda o estágio curricular realizado no Hospital Veterinário de São Bento, em Lisboa, no âmbito da conclusão do Mestrado Integrado em Medicina Veterinária. Este está dividido em três partes, em que a primeira aborda a casuística observada durante o estágio. A segunda parte apresenta uma revisão bibliográfica sobre a obesidade em cães. Por fim, a terceira parte descreve um caso clínico de um cão com excesso de peso. A obesidade é um problema global, afetando tanto países desenvolvidos como em desenvolvimento. Assim como em humanos, a obesidade em cães é uma das doenças nutricionais mais frequentes, levando a uma redução da qualidade de vida. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos da colocação de um balão intragástrico no tratamento da obesidade canina. Ao longo de 116 dias (16 semanas), o cão perdeu 12,35 quilogramas; Abstract: Small Animal Medicine and Surgery: Use of an intragastric balloon in treating canine obesity The present report summarizes a curricular internship conducted at Hospital Veterinário de São Bento, in Lisbon, as part of the conclusion of the Integrated Master in Veterinary Medicine. It comprises three sections. The first section focuses on the casuistic observed during the internship. The second section presents a literature review on canine obesity, while the third section showcases a clinical case. Obesity is a growing concern not only in developed nations but also in an increasing number of developing and underdeveloped countries. Similar to human population, obesity in canines is a common nutritional disorder, significantly impacting their quality of life. This work aimed to document the effects of placing an intragastric balloon in treating canine obesity. Over a span of 116 days, the animal successfully lost 12,35 kilograms.
