Abstract

Os trabalhadores de atividades marítimas possuem uma perceção próxima da real sobre esta interação; Study of the attraction of monk seals (Monachus monachus) to marine fish farming establishments on Madeira Island, Portugal Abstract: Marine fish farms in an open environment attract piscivorous predators due to the large number of confined fish. The monk seals is distributed over the island of Madeira and Ilhas Desertas and it’s an extremely vulnerable and threatened population. The goal of this work was to study the impact of the presence of the monk seal in aquaculture in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM), and vice versa. Under this study, a survey was carried out with maritime activities’s workers, an interview with fish farms’ production managers, factors influencing the attraction of monk seals to these installations were evaluated and the interactions with of monk seals and fish farms were studied. It was found that the monk seal/fish farming relationship is “low critical”. It was concluded that the proximity to resting and reproduction sites are one of the most attractive factors for the monk seal. Workers in maritime activities have a perception close to reality about this interaction.
