Abstract

Quanto à bolsa de valores de Xangai, os poucos casos de rendibilidades anormais estatisticamente significativos observam-se em torno da data do 1.º evento, verificando-se uma quase total ausência de impactos estatisticamente significativos em torno da data do 2.º evento; Abstract: Stock market impact of Covid-19: the case of the stock market in Portugal, USA and China This study aims to analyze the impact of declarations of global emergency (1st event) and pandemic due to COVID-19 (2nd event), by the World Health Organization (WHO), on the stock markets of Lisbon, New York and Shanghai, based on event study methodology. The empirical results show the existence of statistically significant negative abnormal returns for a higher number of companies listed on the Lisbon and New York stock exchanges, when the WHO declared COVID-19 to be a global pandemic. However, there are no significant impacts in terms of abnormal returns for the declaration of a global emergency, in these two stock exchanges. As for the Shanghai stock exchange, the few cases of statistically significant abnormal returns are observed around the date of the 1st event, with an almost total absence of statistically significant impacts around the date of the 2nd event.
