Abstract

Abstract Mértola was an important trading port since the Iron Age because of it’s privileged position at the end of the navigable leg of the Guadiana River. For more than twenty centuries the settlement occupied a rocky spur, of harsh topography, at an interfluve position that guarantied exceptional conditions of enhanced defences by a wall which always stayed essentially with the same perimeter. The port’s control and the development of artisanal activities conditioned the city’s sprawl outside the wall and the implementation of it’s funerary areas. In this communication we present the synthesis of more than forty years of investigation work that allows to identify the constants and variables of it’s urban evolution. We also aim to locate and characterize the places of worship, the structures of power, the residential areas, the areas dedicated to funerary functions and the areas of artisanal activities. All in all, the investigation work allowed us to determine the diachronic evolution of the city’s structure during the Middle Ages, since the Vth century to 1509 (moment in which Duarte D’Armas’s painting gives us an idea of the city’s spacial configuration). Keywords: arqueological sequence, topographic evolution, spacial transformations, urbanism and diachrony
