A botica do Mosteiro de Alcobaça

Abstract

A maioria das boticas monásticas conhecidas na Europa ocidental, encontrava-se no interior dos conventos e mosteiros para inicialmente tratar as comunidades religiosas e, posteriormente prestar apoio às populações que residiam nos arredores e aos peregrinos que ali acorriam em busca de auxílio. Frequentemente, dispunham de um jardim botânico ou horto do boticário onde eram plantadas árvores provavelmente de frutos (pomares) e hortaliças (hortícolas e medicinais) para o tratamento dos enfermos, como era hábito na época. Na mesma obra estão descritos os elementos necessários para o bom funcionamento da enfermaria e da botica. Pela descrição das despesas nos livros do Mosteiro de Alcobaça, constam entre elas, as obras efetuadas na botica, os provimentos de mezinhas, roupas de cama e mantimentos para os doentes e pobres. Assim, poder-se-á ter uma noção aproximada da importância do papel que desempenhava a botica e o respetivo boticário do mosteiro. As localizações da botica e da enfermaria foram alteradas ao longo do tempo, em função do crescimento do mosteiro. Entre os séculos XIV e XV encontrava-se a nascente da sala medieval dos monges, atualmente o claustro do Cardeal. No edifício inexistente estava a portaria do mosteiro e outras dependências, e em particular a enfermaria.
