Apesar de haver um aumento da investigação sobre a paternidade, esta é ainda bastante diminuta, quando a comparamos com o volume da investigação sobre a maternidade. Procurando contribuir para aprofundar a investigação na área da paternidade, o objetivo deste estudo foi compreender e explorar a vivência do ser pai ao longo do ciclo de vida, dando voz ao sujeito que a experienciou. Participaram neste estudo cinco homens com filhos adultos. Os dados foram recolhidos através de entrevistas narrativas e foram analisados com base no Método Fenomenológico de Investigação em Psicologia (Giorgi & Sousa, 2010). Identificaram-se 22 constituintes essenciais, agrupados em cinco áreas: Significado emocional de ser pai, Representação do que é ser pai, Mudanças resultantes da paternidade, Vivência da paternidade ao longo do ciclo de vida e Envolvimento paterno. Tendo em conta os participantes deste estudo, a vivência da paternidade, vivência bastante significativa, despoleta diversas mudanças, tanto na transição para a paternidade, como ao longo do ciclo de vida. Ser pai requer então adaptações constantes ao longo do desenvolvimento dos filhos, adaptações essas que permitem que o papel do pai seja adequado; Paternity experiences Abstract: Although there has been an increase in research on paternity, it is still quite small when we compare it with the volume of research on motherhood. So, in order to deepen the investigation in the area of paternity, the objective of this study was to understand and explore the experience of paternity throughout the life cycle, giving voice to the subject who experienced it. Five men with adult children participated in this study. The data were collected through narrative interviews, and were analyzed based on the Phenomenological Method of Investigation in Psychology (Giorgi & Sousa, 2010). 22 essential constituents were identified, grouped into five areas: Emotional meaning of being a father, Representation of what it means to be a father, Changes resulting from paternity, Experience of paternity throughout the life cycle and Paternal involvement. Taking into account the participants of this study, the experience of paternity, a very significant experience, triggers several changes, both in the transition to paternity and throughout the life cycle. Being a father therefore requires constant adaptations throughout the development of the children, adaptations that allow the father's role to be adequate.
