Abstract

O Projeto de Extensão da Plataforma Continental para além das 200 milhas marítimas resulta da aplicação do artigo 76.º da Convenção das Nações Unidas sobre o Direito do Mar. A implementação, em Portugal, do projeto de extensão foi resultado de um investimento e esforço muito significativos, os quais têm permitido aumentar o conhecimento sobre o mar profundo, em particular no que diz respeito à sua morfologia, ocorrência e distribuição de recursos naturais vivos e minerais. As oportunidades que decorrem da extensão da soberania sobre novos domínios marítimos são imensas, desde logo no campo da inovação e desenvolvimento tecnológico que permitam aceder a estas vastas áreas situadas, tipicamente, a profundidades superiores a 3.000 metros, criando condições para a exploração sustentável dos recursos naturais e proteção do meio marinho.
