Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of a long-term community exercise program on health indicators and subjective well-being in individuals with Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM). METHODOLOGY: Subjects with DMT2 of both sexes (n = 14, 63.7 ± 6.9 years) par-ticipated in a 24-week combined exercise program. Physical fitness was assessed by selected tests of the Senior Fitness Test, manual and isokinetic dynamometer and bioelectrical impedance, and EuroQol-5D-5N for quality of life. The participants were categorized into 2 groups based on the percentage of attendance in the exercise program; more than 60% (GE≥60%) and less than 60% (GE <60%). RESULTS: There were significant improvements in the GE≥60% in 30-Second Chair Stand Test, Time Up and Go, Back Stratch Test, Chair Sit and Reach and four vari-ables of body composition (abdominal perimeter, fat mass and fat free mass). In the questionnaire EQ-5D-5L, it is verified that the GE <60% registered a worse quality of life than in GE≥60%. CONCLUSION: The long-term physical exercise program had a positive impact on functional physical fitness and attenuated the decrease in the quality of life in individ-uals with T2DM of GE≥60%.
