ECOSSISTEMAS DA PLATAFORMA CONTINENTAL

Abstract

Terra é um planeta azul, em que 70% da superfície está ocupada por mar. Mais de 90% desse enorme volume está a profundidades superiores a 200 metros, onde a luz escasseia e a vida toma contornos diferentes dos que se observam nas zonas onde a energia solar penetra. O fundo do mar, na sua escuridão, é a última grande fronteira marinha a ser explorada. Denominado “mar profundo”, esse gigantesco ambiente, cujo potencial para o desenvolvimento de pesquisas é igualmente imenso, é o maior bioma na Terra e tem uma série de características que o tornam distinto dos outros ecossistemas marinhos e terrestres. É comum afrmarse que o ser humano conhece melhor a superfície lunar do que o fundo do mar. De facto, só para chegar a uns escassos 40 metros de profundidade temos que utilizar um escafandro, e os 100 metros já se tornam impossíveis de visitar sem o recurso a um submarino. O conhecimento que se vem adquirindo sobre estes ambientes profundos mostra que provavelmente neste bioma vivem mais de um milhão de espécies animais ainda desconhecidas (sem falar dos microrganismos, que em algumas zonas são mais de 90% da biomassa dos sedimentos (Danovaro et al., 2015)). É, pois, necessário estudar esta biodiversidade e, como tal, dezenas de novas espécies de peixes, corais e outros animais são descobertos anualmente. Nas últimas décadas, e essencialmente como consequência da disponibilidade de modernos instrumentos tecnológicos, os registos de novas espécies têm aumentado. Nos dias de hoje existem robôs e sensores que conseguem ir mais fundo, flmando e recolhendo organismos destes ambientes remotos para serem estudados. Foi gra- ças a eles que, e apenas no fnal dos anos setenta, se descobriram as fontes hidrotermais e mais recentemente os bancos de corais de profundidade. Apesar de desconhecido, o mar profundo é um bioma extraordinariamente importante, pois dele dependem a sequestração de carbono, a regeneração de nutrientes, entre outros. Na realidade, a maioria dos ciclos biogeoquímicos do planeta estão largamente dependentes deste grande bioma. O presente guião pretende ser uma abordagem inicial ao mar profundo, aos seus ecossistemas, biodiversidade e processos.
